Two Sutter Health Affiliates Named as Nation’s Top Hospitals

Half of Top Acute Care Hospitals in California are with Sutter Health

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 10, 2007 – Sutter Health-affiliated Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (Summit campus in Oakland) and California Pacific Medical Center (Pacific campus in San Francisco) have been named to the Leapfrog Group’s 2007 top hospitals list. The two Sutter affiliates are among only four acute care facilities in California to receive this prestigious honor from Leapfrog, the prominent consortium of some of the nation’s largest employers.

The Sutter hospitals were named as among the best based on the Leapfrog Group’s safety and quality survey of nearly 1,300 hospitals nationwide. The consortium is challenging health care providers to make significant "leaps" in four categories:

• Computerized Physician Order Entry
• Use of intensivists (specially trained critical care physicians) in intensive care units
• Evidence-based hospital referral
• Leapfrog safe practices score (compilation score on 27 procedures to reduce preventable medical mistakes)
