Sutter Health Welcomes New General Counsel

SACRAMENTO, Calif., December 17, 2008 - Sutter Health has announced the appointment of Florence L. Di Benedetto as senior vice president, general counsel. She will assume her new role January 5, 2009, succeeding longtime General Counsel Gary Loveridge who is retiring.

Formerly senior partner of the Sacramento-based law firm Hunter Richey Di Benedetto & Eisenbeis, LLP (HRDE) for the past two decades, Di Benedetto served for more than 10 years as the firm’s health law section senior partner with responsibility for management of HRDE’s work for physician groups and major health care delivery systems including Sutter Health.

From 1989 to 1995, Di Benedetto worked as HRDE’s litigation section senior partner, overseeing commercial and health care-related litigation and trying cases in state and federal court as well as in a variety of administrative tribunals.

She was with the San Francisco firm of Hanson Bridgett Vlahos Marcus and Rudy from 1982 to 1988, following a one-year appointment as a research attorney in the San Mateo Superior Court. During the late 1980s she worked as assistant general counsel for what was then known as the Alta Bates Corporation, which later became part of Sutter Health.

DiBenedetto attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations. She studied abroad at London University and the Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw, Poland. She earned her law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1981 and later went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration in health services management. For many years she served as an adjunct faculty member at the U.C. Davis, King Hall School of Law and also taught in the graduate programs at the University of San Francisco, Chapman University and Golden Gate University.

From January of 2005 through January of 2006, Di Benedetto served as chairman of the Board of the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. She was on the Executive Committee of the Chamber of Commerce from 1999 through 2006, serving in various capacities, including as legal counsel, chair of the annual “Capitol to Capitol” lobbying trip to Washington, D.C., and as vice president for regional policy.
