    Major Recognition for Eden Medical Center Cancer Program


    CASTRO VALLEY, Calif., February, 2009 - Eden Medical Center has received a three-year approval and seven commendations by the renowned American College of Surgeons for the Commission on Cancer (ACOS/CoS).

    Through an on-site survey process, the ACOS/CoC usually conducts an external objective evaluation of the facility’s performance according to Standards of the Approval Program. By undertaking this evaluation, the dedicated employees of Eden Medical Center have demonstrated their commitment to quality care, ongoing improvement, and public accountability for the care and services we provide our patients.

    Eden received commendations in the following survey areas:

    • Outcomes analysis

    • Abstracting & coding of cancer cases on time

    • Quality of data submission to the national cancer database (NCDB)

    • American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging – 97 percent of Eden’s cancer cases were staged by the managing physician

    • Clinical trials

    • Prevention and early detection programs

    • Cancer registry staff education
    The cancer program at Eden offers a range of services including:
    • Tumor registry (database of all cancer cases diagnosed, and or treated at Castro Valley and San Leandro campuses)

    • Radiology

    • Lab and Pathology

    • Surgery (inpatient and outpatient)

    • Lymphedema and Rehabilitation Services

    • Social work, and education

    • Sutter East Bay Neuroscience Center for brain tumors (malignant and non-malignant)

    • Professional education and staff support

    • Pharmacy

    • Quality improvement

    • Nutritional services

    • Clinical management of input and output oncology services
    The cancer committee, chaired by Ostap Melnyk, M.D., medical oncologist, oversees the cancer program and its activities.
