$1 Million Grant For Sacramento Health Clinic

Funds Donated By Sutter Health to The Effort

SACRAMENTO, Calif., October 30, 2009 - Sutter Health today donates $1 million to The Effort, a Sacramento-based community health clinic. The funds will cover costs associated with an estimated 8,000 additional medical care and mental health care visits in the Sacramento area over the next two years.

The Effort provides primary care, substance abuse treatment and mental health services for the community’s underserved. As a safety net clinic, The Effort has seen a dramatic increase in patients needing services over the past year as a result of the national economic downturn.

Meeting community health care needs is the cornerstone of Sutter Health's not-for-profit mission. Its care and services for the poor and underserved and benefits for the broader community totaled $599 million in 2008.

Pat Fry, president and CEO of Sutter Health
“As a not-for-profit health system with hospitals throughout Bay Area and Northern California, recognizing and responding to community need is central to our mission,” said Pat Fry, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “We see how the national economic downturn and our state’s own financial crisis have placed a stress on many families throughout our region. Supporting The Effort really means supporting patients and helping those who are most in need find a health care home.”

Tom Gagen, CEO of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento
“The Effort has a long history of transforming lives in the Sacramento area by offering a vast range of health care services, addictions treatment and mental health services for the most needy,” said Tom Gagen, CEO of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. “We at Sutter are proud to partner with The Effort to improve the health of all of those in our community.”

Robert S. Caulk, CEO of The Effort
“As budgets are stretched thin during these difficult economic times, this funding will allow us to help more pregnant women, children and adults who are in need of medical and mental health services,” said Robert S. Caulk, CEO of The Effort. ”The $1 million gift from Sutter Health is a very generous example of the longtime, ongoing support that we have received from this organization as a community partner.”
