Decade of Improving Quality Health Care for Patients

Sutter’s Management and Clinical Excellence Program Marks Milestone

SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 19, 2009 - Sutter Health today marks a major milestone in the network’s dedication to improving health care for patients – the 10th anniversary of its Management and Clinical Excellence program (MCE).

The unique, hands-on educational series, offered to a wide range of professionals across the Sutter network of physician organizations and hospitals, teaches participants how to effectively work together to further improve health care quality and efficiency for patients.

MCE is key to Sutter’s focus on transforming health care quality and affordability. More than 1,000 employees successfully completed the course since its inception in 1999, and other health care organizations view it as a model in achieving optimal clinical performance. Notable MCE projects implemented at entities across the system include:

    • Nearly 50 percent improvement in patient survival through improved identification and intervention of sepsis.
    • Significant improvement in the quality of patient care through the elimination of central line blood stream infections in the ICU.
    • Improved patient safety and employee safety and satisfaction through education and hands-on training of safe patient transfer in the Med-Surg unit.
    • Enhanced patient safety through the development of a more efficient, automated process for medication prescribing in the Sutter-wide electronic health record.
