Want Doctors Committed to Quality Patient Care? Look for Physician Organizations with Sutter Health

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Sept. 25, 2009 - Five medical groups within the Sutter Medical Network are being honored today by the Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA), a prominent health care leadership group that promotes quality improvement accountability, and affordability of health care in California.

The quality awards are part of IHA's annual Pay for Performance (P4P) recognitions. The winners are:

    • Top Performer – Marin Independent Practice Association in Marin county, aligned IPA
    • Top Performer – Mills-Peninsula Medical Group in San Mateo county, aligned IPA
    • Top Performer – Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties
    • Top Performer – Sutter West Medical Group in Yolo county, affiliated with the Sutter Medical Foundation
    • Top Performer and Most Improved – Solano Regional Medical Group in Solano county, affiliated with Sutter Regional Medical Foundation
The P4P program ranks participating medical groups based on performance in four measurement domains: clinical quality, patient experience, information technology‐enabled systems, and coordinated diabetes care. Top performing physician organizations are identified by calculating a composite score in each of the four P4P measurement domains, which are then weighted according to the recommended P4P payment weightings to compute an overall composite score. Overall the IHA results found “striking regional variance in health care performance” with “the Bay Area and Sacramento regions perform(ing) well above the statewide average.”

Gordon Hunt M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer for Sutter Health
“P4P programs like this are important in a couple of ways,” said Gordon Hunt, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer for Sutter Health. “It’s a useful tool for patients who want to learn more about the quality of care provided by a doctor’s group. It also helps our physician groups in the Sutter Medical Network identify ways to further improve care, increase safety and provide better outcomes for our patients.”

Jeff Burnich, M.D., senior vice president and executive officer for the Sutter Medical Network
“I’m extremely proud of the medical groups within our Network that were honored by IHA,” said Jeff Burnich, M.D., senior vice president and executive officer for the Sutter Medical Network. “Truly, all of the physician organizations in the Sutter Medical Network are focusing their attention on elevating clinical quality and service excellence. Together we want to provide a consistent level of exceptional care for all of our patients.”

57 percent of Americans say they would use quality rankings to compare doctors in their community.
