Local Pediatrician Voted Area's "Best" by Patients' Families

ANTIOCH, Calif., January 14, 2009 - Pediatrician Richard Singer, M.D., of the Sutter Delta Medical Group (SDMG) received 2008’s Best of Brentwood Award. Upon learning of his award Dr. Singer stayed true to his reputation and turned the spotlight back on his patients and their families.

I am truly honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Singer, “and I am grateful that the families I have cared for are comfortable with the medical care they received.”

Discovery Bay’s Dathia Amis tells every parent she knows about the outstanding care her three children (ages three, six and eight) receive from Dr. Singer, who has seen them all since birth.

“My husband and I met with Dr. Singer while I was still pregnant with our first,” said Amis. “He was warm, friendly and everything you would ever want in a pediatrician, so it was an easy fit.”

Five years later the Amis Family found out just how lucky they were to have Dr. Singer as their pediatrician. Amis’s six-year-old son, who was three at the time, was sick and had recently been diagnosed with asthma. On a very late Saturday evening they took him to the hospital where he received a breathing treatment. By Sunday morning Dr. Singer had already called to check-in and see how the young boy was doing. Amis told him that he wasn’t doing well, and Dr. Singer was immediately concerned.

“He said, ‘I know it’s a Sunday, but do you mind if I come to your house?’ ” said Amis. “He showed up, checked his blood-oxygen level and said, ‘We need to call an ambulance. Your son is in respiratory distress.’ Then he followed the ambulance to the hospital and stayed with me the whole time holding my hand . . . He saved his life.”

When asked how she would sum up Dr. Singer to someone who had never met him Amis said, “[He] is what health care should be!”

Dr. Singer has been in private practice since 1997 and estimates that he cares for between 600 and 700 families. That’s a lot of patients for a man who still makes house calls, which is probably why he is 2008’s Best of Brentwood.
