Mills-Peninsula Health Services Honored for Electronic Health Record Adoption
Sutter Health Affiliated Hospital Among Elite Group Recognized in the U.S.
BURLINGAME, Calif., April 1, 2010 - Mills-Peninsula Health Services today celebrates its one-year anniversary as a “wired hospital” and national recognition for its electronic health record (EHR) implementation. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), an industry authority in health care information technology, recently recognized Mills-Peninsula for its high degree of EHR adoption. Less than 2 percent of U.S. hospitals measured by HIMSS have achieved this recognition.
HIMSS tracks hospitals’ EHR implementation efforts across a spectrum of “adoption stages” (0-7).” Within one year, Mills-Peninsula reached Stage 6, which heavily reflects the hospital medical staff’s use of EHR technology in place of paper forms to place orders and document patient care. HIMSS’ Stage 7 represents the pinnacle of a fully paperless patient record environment.
“This national recognition truly honors our physicians and clinicians at Mills-Peninsula who are the first in our Sutter network to use our EHR system in the hospital setting. Caregivers and employees representing all of our hospitals had a hand in designing our system to enhance clinical quality, patient safety and care coordination,” said Jon Manis, chief information officer for Sutter Health. “It’s really the partnership between our information services staff, caregivers and employees across all aspects of hospital services that make an install and robust use of the system possible.”
Sutter Health recently announced plans to accelerate implementation of its EHR system in affiliated hospitals across the not-for-profit network. Sutter estimates it will invest approximately $400 million over the next five years to complete the installations. The hospital focus builds on Sutter’s ongoing installations across its affiliated medical groups and follows the HIMSS-recognized installation at Mills-Peninsula.
“The HIMSS’ recognition of our first hospital implementation at Mills-Peninsula bolsters our confidence in our approach to introducing this technology in a way that truly benefits our patients and caregivers,” added Manis.
Sutter Health has already installed the EHR system in the majority of its physician care centers. Sutter’s EHR today connects more than 12,000 caregivers serving more than one million patients in Northern California. Nearly 300,000 patients use the network’s personal health record service to partner with their doctors in taking charge of and managing their health.
