Sutter Breaks Ground on Elk Grove Surgery Center
SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 18, 2011 - Elk Grove city officials and Sutter Health today broke ground on a $10.8 million surgery center at the site of the Sutter medical campus at 8170 Laguna Blvd.
The Sutter Elk Grove Surgery Center is the next step toward a full medical campus in Elk Grove, giving patients access to more critical specialty services close to home. The surgery center will be located on the northeast corner of the property, next to the existing Sutter Medical Plaza/Laguna medical office buildings at 8170 Laguna Blvd. Sutter Health opened its first medical building in Elk Grove in 1991. Since then, Sutter has continued its commitment to providing quality care to the local community, and looks forward to implementing its long-term plan to expand services in Elk Grove as the community itself grows.
"While the economic recession slowed our ability to implement our master plan for Elk Grove, we remain committed to building a large, integrated Sutter campus in Elk Grove that would include a community hospital," said Tom Blinn, CEO of Sutter Medical Foundation. Ultimately, the timing of the full medical campus is dependent on the economy and the re-emergence of growth in the Elk Grove area, Blinn added.
"I am delighted to have Sutter as a long-term partner in our community," said Elk Grove Mayor Steven Detrick. "Not only will this project create 160 construction-related jobs, but once completed the surgery center will bring stable, professional long-term jobs to our community."
The Sutter Elk Grove Surgery Center will benefit the local community by reducing freeway traffic, providing patient convenience and increasing patient satisfaction as residents access more medical procedures they need closer to home. The surgery center will feature two operating rooms with a capacity of approximately 1,250 procedures the first year. If needed, a third operating room can easily be added.
Sutter currently has 257 physicians and staff on site, and once completed, the surgery center will increase that number to 275. The anticipated surgical specialties that will be provided at the surgery center include: Gynecology, Podiatry, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Urology and ENT. Sutter will also be looking into adding Pain Management procedures.
Once Sutter builds a fully integrated medical campus in Elk Grove, the surgery center will be converted to another Sutter building, as the operating rooms will be relocated inside the medical campus.
Sutter physicians operating in Elk Grove are part of the newly-expanded Sutter Medical Group, which started operations as a fully merged practice on January 1, 2011. The new group represents four nationally-recognized medical groups and is comprised of 475 physicians and 122 allied health professionals. As a result physicians are able to more efficiently coordinate care and patients will have access to a wide variety of health care services from primary care to highly-specialized medical services, such as oncology and neuroscience.
