Philosophy of Care
I started medical school after a seven-year background of social work, which has affected my practice of medicine. More than physiology and medication is necessary for the health of the people seeking my assistance. What are the person’s background, home, and family like, and how do they change the treatment I can offer? As a social worker I did home visits, which led me to offer house calls to elderly, homebound patients. These are a welcome diversion from the everyday office visits and part of the reason I chose to take a special interest in geriatrics. At the same time I did not want to give up my involvement in family medicine. I enjoy seeing age groups—connecting generations and trying to understand their effect on each other. I also manage my patients when they are hospitalized at St. Luke’s to provide continuity in their return to health.
