    Philosophy of Care

The challenges of our rapidly changing medical profession occupy a great deal of my time. I am fortunate to have a twin brother who is at the forefront of health care innovation (both in technology and utilization of care). In the last year, we have been collaborating in creating new models of care that would accomplish the following: 1. delivery of high quality care, 2. lower the cost of delivering that care. 3. while respecting preferences of patient and physicians. A great deal of these discussions revolve around use of data and the coming revolution in technology (robotics, communication, 'big data'). For example, a new machine approved by the FDA can deliver sedatives during procedures with better safety and better patient comfort, while decreasing the cost to the patient and or taxpayer (everyone wins). I am funneling these ideas to my colleagues at Sutter locally and generally. Overall, it is a great time to be a physician and a patient. Since joining Sutter, the care that I can deliver has increased in quality exponentially. My only significant frustration: these ideas can be painfully slow to implement (I am learning to patient). I rest in the knowledge that the truly good ideas will eventually be put into play. After 25 years of active clinical practice, I am truly amazed at the progress we have made.
