    Philosophy of Care

I am a Bay Area native, and I love it here.

I temporarily left the Bay Area for college at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. While there I focused on public health, with a particular emphasis on women and children. I spent a lot of my free time volunteering at various places, including Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island and a women's shelter on the Sioux Indian Reservation in Lake Andes, South Dakota. Each experience helped me to understand the significance of social, cultural and economic influences on health and well-being.

I made my way back to San Francisco to work as a research assistant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco. I worked on projects related to how pregnant women and their partners make difficult decisions about whether or not to undergo prenatal testing. This experience solidified my desire to study medicine.

I attended medical school at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, where Los Angeles County Hospital was my classroom. The patients, who often had no access to the health care system until they were very ill, taught me the incredible power of a mutually respectful doctor-patient relationship.

After medical school, I moved back to the Bay Area to complete my residency in family medicine at San Jose Medical Center, where we helped provide medical care to the diverse community in downtown San Jose.

Outside of medicine, travel is one of my favorite things, and I have frequently visited Latin America, where I can use my Spanish language skills. I particularly enjoyed the time I spent in Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica, sometimes for pleasure, and sometimes mixing some medicine in with the trip.

I love taking care of multiple generations of families because I think that knowing something about a person and where they come from is a key part of managing chronic illness. I believe that the mind and the body are intimately connected. With this in mind, I am a practitioner and advocate of yoga and outdoor walking/hiking for patients' physical and spiritual benefits.

I consider the physician-patient relationship a partnership, and I enjoy working with my patients, particularly to address preventive health care topics so that we can be proactive about health, rather than reactive to illness.

My particular areas of interest include full-spectrum family medicine, including the care of children and adolescents, and women's health. I welcome the opportunity to work with you at our beautiful clinic in Redwood City.
