More About This Provider
Originally from British Columbia, Canada, Dr. Dowd attended medical school at UCLA, where he also completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed subspecialty training in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle where he spent time at Harborview Medical Center, one of the nations busiest trauma centers, as well as Seattle Children’s Hospital.
After fellowship, he joined the faculty of UCLA, where he developed a busy clinical practice specializing in management of complex conditions of the upper extremity, in addition to teaching medical students, residents and fellows. As the only orthopaedic hand surgeon within the division, he managed a wide array of traumatic, congenital, sports-related and degenerative conditions of the hand, wrist and elbow. He also had the privilege of joining the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs hospital, where he was the primary hand surgeon caring for veterans within the large geographic region which it serves.
Dr. Dowd approaches his role as an orthopaedic hand surgeon as that of an educator, with a focus first on helping patients understand their condition and answer their questions. His aim is to provide information on what treatment options are available so that each patient can choose what best suits their own values and priorities.
Away from work, Dr. Dowd spends as much time outside as possible. He enjoys hiking, camping and traveling with his family.
