Abdominal Pain and Other Illness
Many chronic illnesses, such as Reference sickle cell disease Opens New Window, Reference diabetes Opens New Window, Reference inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Opens New Window, and Reference cystic fibrosis Opens New Window, can cause abdominal pain.
Sudden (acute) illnesses, such as Reference strep throat Opens New Window and Reference influenza (flu) Opens New Window, can cause abdominal pain when the glands (lymph nodes) in the belly become swollen or inflamed. This inflammation of the glands is called mesenteric adenitis.
