    Step Aerobics

    Step Aerobics

    Topic Overview

Step aerobics is a variation of traditional aerobics. It usually provides a more intense workout. You can learn the various moves from DVDs, TV programs, or classes.

Step aerobics is like standard aerobics with the addition of a specially designed platform. You step on and off the platform during your workout. It is more intense than walking but less intense than running.

Step aerobics is good for people of all levels of fitness because:

    • It is a low-impact activity, so there is less chance of most kinds of injury.
    • The step height can be adjusted to allow for the right level of intensity.
    • It requires fewer dance-type movements than traditional aerobics.

But some precautions are needed. People with knee, hip, or ankle problems should avoid step aerobics, or use a lower step height that does not cause pain.

Before you buy a step to use at home, test it out in the store. Make sure it will support your weight and will not slide.
