Fetal Blood Transfusion for Rh Sensitization
A blood transfusion to treat the effects of Reference Rh sensitization Opens New Window on the fetus can be done before birth. During the transfusion, Reference Rh-negative Opens New Window blood that is compatible with the fetus's blood type is given to the fetus. The fresh blood provided by the transfusion replaces the red blood cells that have been destroyed by the mother’s immune system.
A blood transfusion can also be given to the infant shortly after birth.
