Protect Your Breast Health

Mammograms are very safe. Modern mammogram machines use a very low dose of radiation — 0.42 mSv. That's about the same amount of cosmic radiation you get flying across country on a plane. And it's the same amount you get in natural background radiation over seven normal weeks. As with most screening tests, there is a risk of false positives, which can lead to stress and follow-up tests. Overall, the benefits of mammograms outweigh the risks. Women with breast cancer diagnosed in its early stage have a 99% survival rate.

Implants can hide some breast tissue during your mammogram, but it’s still critical to get regular screening mammograms. It’s important to go to a center that has a lot of experience performing mammography on women with breast implants. And you should tell the scheduler that you have implants so radiologist or technologist is aware. Certain steps can be taken to ensure as much breast tissue as possible is seen on the mammogram.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not advised to get routine screening mammograms. If you need to have an abnormality in your breast checked, the technologist will protect your developing baby by placing a lead apron over your belly. Remember, mammograms use a very low level of radiation, and any risk is considered very low.

Wear a comfortable top that's easy to remove. Don't use deodorant or antiperspirant on the day of your mammogram. The chemicals can show up as white spots. Try to schedule your exam after your menstrual period when your breasts are not tender.

In general, a mammography screening isn’t painful. However, there can be minor discomfort or soreness depending on your breast sensitivity.

You'll be taken to a private area where you can undress from the waist down and put on a gown. A staff member will gently place your breasts on the equipment to minimize discomfort. They'll use 2D or 3D mammography equipment to take images of your breasts. You'll need to be still and hold your breath for a few seconds for each image.
