- Treat Ingrown Toenails — Nails sometimes grow into the side of the toe, typically as a result of cutting them too short or rounded at the top. The podiatrist can trim away the nail section that is causing problems. Acutely infected ingrown toenails are typically treated with temporary measures to help stabilize the nail and improve the infected area before progressing toward a more sustainable solution.
- Treat Fungal Infections — If a toenail fungus is not very advanced, you may only need a topical medication. If it is more advanced, the doctor might suggest an oral medication, typically taken for several months.
