Dr. Dougherty pursues clinical-translational research in pulmonary/airway diseases including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis. He is board certified in critical care medicine and internal medicine. He has extensive experience studying the viscoelastic properties of sputum during acute asthma exacerbation and cystic fibrosis. As Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Care Center at CPMC, Dr. Dougherty collaborates with other specialists to provide comprehensive care for patients with cystic fibrosis. His research in this area includes therapeutic drug trials, a collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on quality control of cystic fibrosis mutation genotyping, and quality improvement projects for the illness. Dr. Dougherty is conducting a retrospective study using national cystic fibrosis registry data to assess the role of airways infection in cystic fibrosis patient outcomes.
