Shoulder Problems

Your shoulders each include three bones and a number of muscles, ligaments and tendons that hold the ball of the upper arm in the shoulder socket. Because the shoulders are the most movable joint in the body, they are prone to injury and instability.

Shoulder Problems Facts and Stats

Common shoulder problems include strains, dislocations, sprains, labral tears, torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder and impingement.

  • If you’re over 40, you have a higher risk for adhesive capsulitis, also called frozen shoulder, when moving your shoulder around causes pain. Women experience frozen shoulder more often than men; certain health conditions, such as diabetes, also increase your risk.
  • Your shoulder condition might require surgery, but 90 percent of patients with shoulder pain respond to noninvasive measures such as rest, exercise and medication.
  • A 2010 study reported that 91 percent of top swimmers age 13 to 25 reported shoulder pain at least once.
