Infectious Diseases

Many harmless organisms live in and on your body, but under certain conditions some organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites, may cause infectious diseases such as influenza, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS.

Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases range from mild to life threatening. Here’s what you need to know.

  • Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is the most common sexually transmitted disease. It’s so common that nearly all sexually active men and women contract it at some point in their lives.
  • An estimated 1.2 million U.S. people live with HIV infection, the precursor to AIDS. However, about 12 percent have not yet been diagnosed.
  • Up to 20 percent of the U.S. population may catch the flu (influenza) virus each year. Getting a flu vaccine reduces your risk of flu infection by 50 to 60 percent.

I'm volunteering with a medical/dental mission to Cambodia. I'm concerned about the incidence of TB, and if I'm infected, how soon I could tell? I work closely with children and don't want to expose them to TB after my return. Should I be tested?

Most people infected with tuberculosis (TB) never get an active infection, which is when it is contagious from one person to the other. Infectious Disease Research

Sutter Health Infectious Disease Research
Infectious diseases are caused by germs, and they kill more people worldwide than any other single cause. Germs such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa easily pass from person to person, spreading disease. Research into how these germs spread, and how to treat the illnesses they cause, is critical to global health.
