Overuse Injuries

Overuse injuries such as stress fractures, shin splints and plantar fasciitis can happen when you try to take on too much physical activity too quickly. These injuries are usually progressive rather than acute and can intensify during and after physical activity.

Overuse Injuries Facts and Stats

Overuse injuries such as tendonitis, stress fractures and shin splints are caused by repeated stress to the body. Here’s what you need to know about overuse injuries.

  • Half of all sports medicine injuries in children and teens result from overuse. The most common overuse injuries involve the knees and feet.
  • About 1 in 7 Americans suffer from a musculoskeletal condition. Stress fractures make up between 1 and 15 percent of all athletic injuries; people who commonly develop stress fractures are jumpers, gymnasts, dancers and military recruits.
  • Shin splints, a collective term for injury to the lower legs, can take three to six months to fully heal.
