Sleep disorders lead to sleep deprivation and can seriously threaten your health, performance and safety. Here’s what you need to know.

  • An estimated 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia, trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
  • A 2007 study found that those who cut their sleep from seven to five hours or fewer per night nearly doubled their risk of death from all causes.
  • Reducing your sleep by as little as one and a half hours for just one night may reduce your daytime alertness by as much as 32 percent.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that each year drowsy driving causes at least 100,000 automobile crashes, 71,000 injuries and 1,550 fatalities.
