Pediatric Conditions

You can reduce your child’s risk of common and contagious childhood illnesses, including whooping cough, chickenpox and measles, through vaccination. Other common pediatric conditions, such as asthma, ear infections and diarrhea, aren't preventable. They may require evaluation and treatment by your child's pediatrician.

Pediatric Conditions Facts and Stats

Vaccines can prevent many common childhood diseases such as chickenpox, whooping cough and measles. Here’s what you need to know.

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported nearly 33,000 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in unvaccinated children in 2014—a 15 percent increase over 2013.
  • In 2012, the CDC recorded more than 48,000 pertussis cases, the most since 1955.
  • Measles were eliminated from the U.S. in 2000. But this deadly disease returned back in 2014, with 667 cases recorded by the CDC, because parents were not vaccinating their children.
  • In 1996, when the U.S. vaccination program began, chickenpox caused more than 100,000 hospitalizations and claimed more than 100 lives every year. Since that time, chickenpox deaths have decreased 90 percent and hospitalizations have fallen 85 percent.
  • In 2009, about 1 in 12 U.S. people had asthma, and that number increases every year. An estimated 6.3 million children have asthma.

What causes bedwetting? My grandson (age 11) has wet the bed continuously. The medication he was given didn't help. He says he just can't wake up and sleeps right through it. I want him to feel good about himself, so I'm reaching out for any guidance.

Bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, is normal even up to the age of 7. There is pretty clear evidence that it is genetic to a large extent, so children who take longer to grow out of it may have parents who were... continue reading  about  What causes bedwetting? Does a girl have to reach a certain weight before her periods begin?

Menarche (the start of a girl's menstrual period) is not dependent upon weight alone but the amount of body fat, height and weight all play a role in determining the start of puberty. A woman's genes and the ag... continue reading  about  Does a girl have to reach a certain weight before her periods begin?

My six-year-old niece began to smell strongly of B.O. My sister-in-law mentioned this to their pediatrician who then diagnosed my niece with "precocious puberty." What are the causes and long term affects of this condition?

What a good question with a big answer. Puberty is an important rite of passage for both kids and parents. The average age for puberty is around 11 years old. Precocious puberty is defined as puberty body chang... continue reading  about  My six-year-old niece began to smell strongly of B.O. Genetics Research

Sutter Health Genetics Research
Genetics studies the genes and DNA coding that each person inherits from their parents and how these genes can lead to disease or better health. Some inherited genes cause diseases such as Tay-Sachs or sickle cell anemia, while mutations in genes can cause genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome. However, doctors also use genetics to understand which treatments may work best for an individual.
