Diabetes

Diabetes and its precursor, prediabetes, are major health problems in the United States. Diabetes refers to several conditions that develop when your body cannot regulate the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. The good news: diabetes can be successfully managed with early intervention, qualified care teams and lifestyle changes.

  • Type 2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes, accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes cases in the U.S.
  • Once known as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults. Type 1 diabetes and even rarer genetic forms of diabetes (neonatal or monogenic diabetes) can develop quickly.

Gestational Diabetes Research

Sutter Health Gestational Diabetes Research
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that typically develops during late pregnancy. Diabetes means your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Your body uses glucose for energy. Too much glucose in your blood is not good for you or your baby. Research into gestational diabetes seeks to understand the cause, improve detection methods and management of the disease, and methods of prevention.
