about Sutter Health CPMC's Endocrinology Fellowship Program in this virtual tour.","duration":"PT7M21S","transcript":"[MUSIC PLAYING]\n\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: Welcome to CPMC and our Endocrinology\nFellowship Program and thank you for applying.\nMy goal for this video is for you, as an applicant,\nto get a sense of our program and what sets us apart\nfrom other programs.\nWe are a fairly new program.\nI was an intern here at CPMC back almost 20 years ago.\nAs I completed my residency and started my chief residence\nyear here, I would have loved to stay on as an endocrine fellow,\nbut we didn't have a program at the time.\nAs soon as I was back, Dr. Earle and I\nstarted working on starting our endocrine fellowship program.\nKAREN EARLE: And our focus was always\nto be a clinically-oriented, really teach people\nhow to practice endocrinology type of fellowship program.\nWe have our Fellows do scholarly work.\nIt's one of the requirements.\nBut the goal of this program is to train endocrinologists\nthat are going to be outstanding clinicians.\nCAROL RAMIREZ ROJAS: I picked CPMC for my fellowship\nbecause I was looking for a clinically oriented program\nand I wanted a program that had a lot of hands-on experience.\nSo when I visited CPMC, I felt that it\nwas the right place for me.\nI really enjoy how friendly and approachable\nwere all of the attendings.\nAnd to this day, if I have a question about one\nof my patients, I do not hesitate\nin contacting them and sending them an email.\nAnd they are really responsive.\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: We had the full support of our colleagues\nand the Department of Medicine, and after lots\nof paperwork and many meetings, we\nwere approved by the ACGME in 2012.\nSHILPA JAIN: Because we're a small program,\nthe Fellows can individualize their experience.\nWe are all fully committed to teaching and mentoring\nour Fellows.\nLEONIEROSE DACUYCUY: I chose CPMC for endocrine fellowship\ntraining because the program offered the important things\nthat I was looking for in a fellowship, which\nare excellent clinical training, plenty of experience with FNA\nbiopsies, and geography.\nI really liked the idea of having\nmy own patients to follow.\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: As you can see on our website,\nwe have graduated several wonderful and successful\nendocrinologists.\nAnd we all continue to truly enjoy working closely\nwith our Fellows.\nCHRISTINA KWAN: Since graduating,\nI have been working at an outpatient endocrine clinic\nin the San Francisco Bay Area.\nMy training at CPMC provided me with the knowledge\nand confidence to be the solo endocrine clinician there.\nBut never do I feel alone or worried\nI don't know the answers because the door\nstays open beyond fellowship.\nAnd all the faculty have remained helpful resources\nand sounding board for me in the postgraduate life.\nANTHONY YIN: The FNA and ultrasound clinic\nis a weekly clinic.\nWe biopsy thyroid nodules, sometimes\nlymph nodes in patients with a history of thyroid cancer.\nThe Fellows have hands-on experience\ndoing these procedures.\nIn the course of the two years, we\nexpect that the number of cases well\nexceeds the ACGME requirement.\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: Our goal is to give our Fellows\na strong foundation in clinical endocrinology,\ngraduating Fellows who feel confident going\ninto clinical practice and becoming clinician educators.\nMELISSA WEINBERG: I love when the Fellows\nshow an interest in inpatient diabetes or other hospital\nissues.\nInpatient diabetes is also a great opportunity\nfor the Fellows to interact with the house\nstaff and the medical students.\nBecause diabetes is so ubiquitous in the hospital,\nthe house staff and the medical students\nreally look to the Fellows for guidance\nin how to use the order sets and how\nto change the management of their insulin.\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: Our program is a two-year clinical program\nand our Fellows do continuity clinic\nat least half days a week in addition to our weekly diabetes\nclinic for the duration of the two years.\nMELISSA WEINBERG: The Fellows have an opportunity\nto take care of a wide variety of patients\nwho often present for other reasons but also have diabetes.\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: We have a strong diabetes program\nand offer the newest diabetes technologies to our patients\nand make sure the Fellows learn the ins and outs\nof this exciting technology.\nKAREN EARLE: We have a really high-tech population\nhere in San Francisco.\nAnd so we do have a lot of patients\nthat are interested in the diabetes technology.\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: Our patient population, as well as\nour staff, our colleagues, and our city\nis diverse and inclusive.\nSHILPA JAIN: We get to see a wide range of patients,\na wide range in terms of their medical complications,\ntheir background, their ethnicity,\ntheir socio-economic status.\nSo it's a really rich patient experience.\nKJERSTI KIRKEBY: As a fellow here,\nyou will have your attendings available for back up 24/7\nto answer each and every question\nthat comes up along the way.\nOverall, what I am hoping to get across to you, as an applicant,\nis that here, at CPMC, we are welcoming,\nengaged, and very excited about our fellowship\nand our trainees.\nWe train strong clinicians and patient advocates\nand greatly value our Fellows, our future colleagues.\nI hope you will consider training here, with us.\n[MUSIC PLAYING]"}
