Our mission is to build healthier communities by training superior community-oriented physicians, providing expert person-centered care, and being a catalyst for improving health services in our region. ## Message from the Track Director **Jennifer Shoemaker, M.D., M.P.H.** The Amador County medical community has a long tradition of being a medical student training site through UC Davis School of Medicine Rural-PRIME. That is how I ended up here! Sutter Health has recognized that these enthusiastic local clinicians are a sound foundation for rural residency training. In early 2019, Sutter Amador Hospital partnered with the Sutter Health Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) in Sacramento to apply for a federal Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) grant to start a Family Medicine Rural Residency Track in Amador County. We received the grant award in July of 2019. We applied to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and received our accreditation in May of 2020! The Sutter Family Medicine Rural Amador Residency Track is a 1-2 program, and our inaugural class of residents began in mid-June 2021. The first year will be spent in Sacramento. The second and third years will focus on rural Amador County with the linchpin for training being the Family Medicine Continuity Clinic in Jackson, CA. Rotations will include Inpatient and Emergency Medicine at Sutter Amador Hospital and numerous outpatient experiences with a “longitudinal design” (see Curriculum section for more details). Sutter Amador Hospital is a not-for-profit rural hospital located in Jackson, California, with 52-licensed beds. It is the only hospital in Amador County serving a population of more than 45,000. As the only residency program in Amador County, residents will have a plethora of opportunities to serve a rural population who face unique and complex health disparities.   We have a dedicated group of Sutter and local community clinicians and organizations that we have partnered with to give residents excellent training along with a unique rural perspective on healthcare issues. Our residents will be an integral part of serving our communities in the lovely Sierra foothills. Our goal is to graduate excellent community-oriented Family Medicine physicians who will become the innovative healthcare leaders of the future. Opportunities to hike, trail run, bike, camp, fish and kayak are in abundance. Just a quick drive up scenic Highway 88, you can find some of the best skiing and snowboarding terrain around. The local economic base includes agriculture, county government, a unified school district, tourism, a community college extension and a growing number of small businesses. Agricultural workers, veteran organizations, unsheltered populations and behavioral health needs within this close-knit community provide many options to engage in other fulfilling community activities. ### Living in Amador County Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Amador County offers a charming blend of historic Gold Rush towns, scenic vineyards, and outdoor recreation, all within a relaxed rural setting. Community members enjoy a slower pace of life, with access to hiking, wine tasting, and community events that celebrate the area's rich heritage. Amador Rural Track","thumbnailUrl":"https://cf-images.us-east-1.prod.boltdns.net/v1/static/817826402001/8094aa9f-d67d-4b66-9796-699a9a67dacf/e1bdfed5-2d2a-417b-8a61-796913da5255/1280x720/match/image.jpg","uploadDate":"2020-07-14T18:10:02.519Z","embedUrl":"https://players.brightcove.net/817826402001/79bcaa57-54d7-453c-9f1f-8ab3ef7b15de/index.html?videoId=6171294610001","description":"A stand-alone 27 resident community-based program first year inpatient training is in Sacramento, then residents' clinical experiences continue in the rural town of Jackson, in Amador County California.","duration":"PT3M53S","transcript":"[MUSIC PLAYING]\n\nBOB HARTMANN: Amador County, traditionally,\nis physician underserved, so we're\nlooking for the opportunity to introduce\nmore young, energetic physicians into our community\nand become an integral part of the health care system.\n\nDAVID BEFFA: What's challenging about practicing\nin a small town is that you're basically\nchallenged every day with providing world class\ncare with limited resources.\nJENNIFER SHOEMAKER: There is a certain level of drive\nthat you have if you want to work in a rural community.\nThere's a sense of pride to be able to provide care\nthat people don't already have.\n\nLONI JAY: Today is a really exciting day.\nWe have the opportunity to bring new physicians out\nto this community.\nThis is a community that has not had\nenough providers for a very long time,\nand this is a celebrated day.\n\nARELY MACIAS: I love being outdoors.\nI love the mountains, and I also love the idea\nof being part of the community.\nThat's why I chose Amador.\nJACOB FREY: I selected to the Rural Amador Track\nbecause I wanted to practice medicine and train\nin an area that allowed me to live amongst the community I'd\nlike to serve during my career.\nBOB HARTMANN: The residents will spend the first year\nin Sacramento, and then second and third year, they\nwill be here in Amador County.\nJENNIFER SHOEMAKER: As the residents\nspend their first year in Sacramento,\nthey're really getting their inpatient skills.\nAnd then once they come out here, they have that base.\nLONI JAY: The thing that is most special\nabout our program is the heart.\nIt's a combination of both our residents and our faculty.\nThey come together to create a very beautiful culture.\nARELY MACIAS: We really do love hanging out with one another.\nIt makes work so much easier.\nYou're like, OK, I have to be here from 6 AM to 6 PM,\nbut when you have a great group of people,\nit doesn't feel like work.\nIt feels like I'm hanging out with my friends and family.\nJACOB FREY: I don't think that I really\nunderstood how significant that would be in choosing residency.\nI know in two weeks in right now,\nbut I'm blown away by the relationships\nthat I've already seen.\n\nDINEEN GREER: Residency is hard, but we make it as nurturing\nand as welcoming as possible.\nWe have dedicated time for things\nlike support groups, retreats.\nAll of these things are designed just\nto maintain the overall well-being of our residents\nduring the time that they're with us.\n\nBOB HARTMANN: The practice of medicine here\nis absolutely wonderful.\nGreat patient population, they become your friends.\nYou see them in the grocery store downtown, just\ngood, friendly, generous people.\nARELY MACIAS: They invite me to different farmer's markets\nthat they have.\nCome to my house, get coffee.\nHere's my number.\nIt's an open community and excited\nto have new residents come in.\nJENNIFER SHOEMAKER: It's nice to have residents\nout here and kind of doing the same thing that I did when\nI was a resident and being able to teach them and spark\ntheir interest in something that is different than what they're\ngetting downtown Sacramento.\nJACOB FREY: For me, it was not just being a rural doctor,\nor providing care for that rural community,\nbut living and being part of that rural community\nand also providing exceptional care."} ```
