As a multi-site residency program, residents gain experience caring for diverse patient populations across the continuum of care while developing the clinical, operational, leadership, and teaching skills needed to become well-rounded clinical pharmacists. Residents train in acute care, ambulatory care, medication safety, pharmacy leadership, and transitions of care while working alongside experienced preceptors in a collaborative learning environment. The program emphasizes progressive autonomy, interdisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, research, and professional development, preparing graduates for independent clinical practice, board certification, and postgraduate year two (PGY2) residency training. ## Sutter Health East Bay One of the unique strengths of the East Bay residency is the opportunity to train across multiple hospitals and practice settings within an integrated healthcare system. Residents gain experience in both community and teaching hospital environments, including Alta Bates Summit Medical Center's active Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, where they work alongside physicians, residents, and other learners as members of interdisciplinary care teams. Beyond clinical training, residents participate in local and system-level initiatives in medication safety, quality improvement, formulary management, pharmacy leadership, and practice advancement. Residents also have the opportunity to earn a Teaching Certificate through our partnership with the College of Pharmacy at Touro University California while developing their teaching, precepting, and presentation skills. The Sutter Health East Bay PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). ### Living in East Bay Live and train in the East Bay, a diverse and vibrant region offering a unique blend of urban, suburban, and outdoor lifestyles. From Oakland's thriving food and arts scene to Berkeley's historic neighborhoods and the scenic parks and trails throughout the region, residents enjoy a wide variety of experiences outside of work. Convenient access to BART and major highways makes commuting between training sites straightforward, while proximity to San Francisco, Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, and the California coast provides endless opportunities for weekend adventures.
