Frequently Asked Questions

**How many residents are in the program?**

The Sutter Mills Peninsula Medical Center (SMPMC) PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program accepts **two residents each year.** 

**Is the program ASHP accredited?**

The SMPMC PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program is a new residency program that is not currently accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program is being developed in alignment with ASHP residency standards and intends to pursue ASHP accreditation following the launch of the program.

**How do I apply to the residency program?**

For the 2027-2028 residency year, candidates will apply directly to the program through a local recruitment process.

**When will the first residency class begin?**

The inaugural residency class is scheduled to begin in July 2027.

**What makes this program unique?**

As an inaugural residency program, residents have a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the program while receiving individualized mentorship and support from dedicated pharmacy leaders and preceptors. The program's community hospital setting provides meaningful opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and direct engagement in patient care initiatives.

**Will residents receive teaching opportunities?**

Yes. Residents participate in educational activities throughout the residency year and may have opportunities to provide education to healthcare professionals, pharmacy learners, and patients.

**Why isn't the program participating in the ASHP National Matching Service?**

The SMPMC PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program is conducting a local recruitment process for its inaugural residency class. Future application processes, including participation in the ASHP National Matching Service, will be determined based on the program's accreditation status.
