I trained as a family physician at the county hospital in Contra Costa County. I spent my first two years after residency working as a faculty member at that same hospital--a county hospital where most of the patients had quite limited financial resources. My philosophy of care was cemented at that institution.

As a trained family physician, I believe that getting to know the patient as a whole person, not just as a disease, is an integral part of providing good care. Often, learning more about the patient's daily life, background, and what was happening in her life before she became ill will help to make the clinical picture clearer. I also focus on having good communication with patients, their families, and the doctors who will assume care for them once they leave the hospital.

I enjoy helping my hospitalized patients make difficult decisions when choosing among treatment options. I also enjoy advocating for them once they've made those difficult decisions so that they can receive the most effective and appropriate treatment available.

Lastly, I strongly believe that all patients, regardless of their socioeconomic status or background, deserve to be treated with respect and to receive excellent and thoughtful care.
