Frequently Asked Questions

OpenI need some information on a topic. What's the best way to start?

Answer: Try UpToDate for current summaries on the topic.

Use Medline to find references on the topic – use PubMed, Medline or Ovid Medline.

If the topic is on a malignancy, try the National Cancer Institute.

Take a look at our reference databases that cover a variety of topics.

Answer: Ask the Reference Staff at the Library to do a literature search for you. You can contact us via email at cpmclib@sutterhealth.org.

OpenHow can I get a copy of an article, preferably in electronic form?

Answer: Go to PubMed, select "Single Citation Matcher" from PubMed’s homepage (bottom of page), put in as much information as you know and find the citation. Click on the author and the screen will expand to show you additional information including a "CPMC Full Text" icon if we have an online subscription to the title; clicking on the icon will take you to the full text article online. You may need to enter an ID/password if you are off campus. If you have any trouble accessing any of our electronic journals, please email us at cpmclib@sutterhealth.org. We can also copy and mail you the article, or if we do not own the journal, we can obtain a copy from another library. CPMC Online Full Text

Answer: If you have the article citation, you can also go to Our Journals, put in the name of the Journal  in quotation marks in the Keyword search box, and find the journal. You will be able to tell whether the Library has the journal title and whether we have an electronic version of the title. You can use the link to the journal without an ID/password if you are on the hospital network.

OpenHow can I tell whether the Library has the journal or book I need?

Answer: Go to Our Journals and put the name of the Journal in quotation marks in the Keyword search field. You will be able to tell whether the Library has a print subscription and/or an electronic version of what you are looking for. If there is an electronic version, there will be a clickable link to the online journal.

With Books Online you can access over 100 electronic full text books.

If you are on campus, you will not need any ID/password to access the full text online journals and books. Attending physicians needing offsite access can contact the library for ID/password to some of our journals and books. To obtain articles that are not available with ID/password, email us and we can email the articles directly to you.

Our book catalog listing the books we have on our shelves is online. Go to Book Catalog and search our collection of books and other resources.

Our Interlibrary Loan service can obtain items for you that are not in our collection. Just email us at cpmclib@sutterhealth.org.

OpenHow can I get access to online resources from my office or home?

Answer: Attending physicians can ask the Library for an ID/password to access some of our online resources from home or office. Email us at cpmclib@sutterhealth.org.

OpenIs there a citation manager that I can use?

Answer: Zotero is free, open-source software for managing bibliographic data and related research materials (such as PDF files). Features include generation of in-text citations, footnotes and bibliographies, as well as integration with common word processors, such as Microsoft Word.

Get more information or download Zotero for Windows, Mac, or Linux at its website.

We do not support RefWorks or EndNote. However, here are some tips on how you can import references into RefWorks and EndNote.

RefWorks:
Some databases can directly export citations to RefWorks; in other databases, search citations need to be first saved as text, then be imported from RefWorks. See online RefWorks tutorial for more information.

EndNote/PubMed:

  1. Access PubMed and execute your search.
  2. Place a check next to relevant records and then select "Clipboard" from the pull-down menu next to the "Send to" button.
  3. Click on the "Clipboard" tab to display marked citations. Next, select "MEDLINE" in the dropdown menu next to the "Display" button.
  4. Choose "File" from the "Send to" drop-down list, and then click on "Send to". Select "Save" on the following screen. In the next screen you will be able to change the file name -saved with a *.txt extension.
  5. In EndNote, open the library where you would like these references saved.
  6. Select "Import" from the "File" menu. Next to "Import Data File", click "Choose File" and find your saved text file. Select from the pull down menu of "Import Option" "PubMed (NLM)".
  7. Click the Import button.

EndNote/Ovid databases (CINAHL, Medline, etc.) can direct export citations to EndNote.

  1. Search an Ovid database as usual. At the bottom of the citation display pages you will see the Citation Manager.
  2. Under "Citation Format" choose "Direct Export" and select the Save button.
  3. EndNote will open and prompt you to open a library. The records will be automatically imported into the EndNote library you select. Note: You may need to download this filter before the Direct Export function will work.

EndNote/EBSCO databases can export citations directly into Endnote with EBSCO's Save Manager.

  1. Perform a search, and mark your desired references by checking "Add to Folder".
  2. Click on "Folder has items".
  3. When viewing the Results List, click on the "Save to Disk" icon.
  4. In the Save Manager, select "Bibliographic Manager" tab -- choose the "Citations in Direct Export format" option and click on "save".
  5. EndNote will open and prompt you to open a library. The records will be automatically imported into the EndNote library you select.
