# Leg cramps and blood clots

Learn DVT symptoms, risk factors and when to get care

October 26, 2026Medically reviewed by [Leila Haghighat, M.D., M.Phil., FACC](https://www.sutterhealth.org/find-provider/dr-leila-haghighat-1078057643)

If you’ve ever had a leg cramp stop you in your tracks, you know how painful it can be. Most muscle cramps are temporary and improve with gentle stretching, movement or heat.

“Most leg cramps are benign,” says [Leila Haghighat, M.D.](https://www.sutterhealth.org/find-provider/dr-leila-haghighat-1078057643), a cardiologist with Sutter Health. “They’re relatively common, especially with age.”

But leg pain or cramping can sometimes signal a more serious problem, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that forms in a deep vein. Knowing what else to look for can help you decide when to get medical care.

## Symptoms of a blood clot in the leg

DVT most often develops in a deep vein in the lower leg, thigh or pelvis. Some people have no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they typically affect one leg and can include:

- Pain or tenderness
- Redness or discoloration
- Swelling
- Warmth

“Those symptoms signal that it’s a lot more serious than just a charley horse in your leg,” Haghighat says.

The main danger of DVT is that part of the clot can break loose and travel to the lungs. This can cause a pulmonary embolism (PE), which blocks blood flow in the lungs and requires immediate medical attention.

Call 911 or seek emergency care if you develop chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, a fast or irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness or fainting. A PE can occur even if you haven’t noticed symptoms of DVT.

## How DVT is treated

If a doctor suspects DVT, you may need an ultrasound or other testing to look for a clot. Treatment depends on your symptoms and overall health.

Blood thinners, also called anticoagulants, are the most common treatment. They help keep a clot from getting larger and reduce the chance that new clots will form. Some people may also use compression stockings to help with pain or swelling. In more serious cases, doctors may use medication to dissolve the clot or a procedure to remove it.

## Risk factors for blood clots

Anyone can develop DVT, but some factors increase your risk. Having more than one can raise the risk further. Risk factors include:

- Certain chronic conditions, including cancer, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease and lung disease
- Estrogen-containing birth control, hormone therapy or pregnancy
- Family history of DVT or PE
- Injury to a vein, including a fracture or severe muscle injury
- Limited movement, including bed rest or sitting for long periods
- Older age
- Overweight or obesity
- Previous DVT or PE
- Some inherited clotting disorders
- Surgery, especially involving the abdomen, hips, legs or pelvis

## Other possible causes of leg cramps

A leg cramp doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a blood clot in one of your veins. Other causes of leg cramps or leg pain can include:

### Inactivity

Sitting in one position for a long time can contribute to muscle tightness and cramping. “Lots of people spend our days sitting for prolonged periods of time, and that can cause muscle cramps,” Haghighat says. Getting up regularly, walking and gently stretching your calf muscles may help.

### Peripheral artery disease

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) happens when plaque buildup narrows arteries and reduces blood flow to the legs. It can cause aching or cramping during walking or exercise that usually improves with rest. More advanced PAD may cause pain even when you’re resting.

### Spinal nerve compression

Pressure on a nerve in your lower back can cause pain that travels into your leg. A herniated disk or spinal stenosis may also cause numbness, tingling or weakness.

## When to call a doctor

[Contact a doctor](https://www.sutterhealth.org/schedule-appointment) right away if leg pain or cramping comes with swelling, warmth, redness or discoloration, especially if the symptoms affect only one leg.

“We can help figure out why you have the cramps and determine the right treatment,” Haghighat says.

Leg cramps are common, but symptoms that are new, persistent or different from your usual cramps are worth paying attention to. A doctor can determine whether you’re dealing with a muscle problem, a blood clot or another condition that needs treatment.
