This guide walks you through each trimester — from [prenatal](https://www.sutterhealth.org/services/prenatal-care-and-testing) checkups to preparing for your baby’s arrival — so you can feel informed and confident. ## First Trimester (1-13 weeks) - [Schedule](https://www.sutterhealth.org/patient-resources/my-health-online) prenatal screening tests (ask about the latest cystic fibrosis screening) - Review your physician or midwife obstetric fees, laboratory and special test charges - [Register for a pregnancy class](https://www.sutterhealth.org/patient-resources/find-event-results?query=%22pregnancy%22&verticalKey=events) to get answers for common questions about your pregnancy, including nutrition, exercise, your baby's development and how to cope with the discomforts of pregnancy ## Second Trimester (14-27 weeks) These tests and screenings are performed during months 3-6 of pregnancy: - The expanded alpha-fetoprotein (EAFP) blood test is performed between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy to test for spina bifida, Down syndrome and other birth defects - The glucose screening test for [gestational diabetes](https://www.sutterhealth.org/services/gestational-diabetes-care) - A Rhogam injection, if advised by your healthcare provider. Add these tasks to your to-do list for your second trimester: - If this is your first baby, [enroll in classes](https://www.sutterhealth.org/patient-resources/find-event-results?limit=10&query=%22newborn%22&verticalKey=events) that cover preparing for your first baby, understanding preterm labor, childbirth preparation, breastfeeding and newborn parenting - Complete the hospital pre-admission form for your [birth center](https://www.sutterhealth.org/find-location-results?facets=%5B%7B%22i%22%3A%22c_locationType%22%2C%22v%22%3A%5B%22Birth+Center%22%5D%7D%5D&limit=10&query=%22Birth+Center%22&verticalKey=healthcare_facilities) - Parents of multiples are encouraged to [enroll in a class](https://www.sutterhealth.org/patient-resources/find-event-results?limit=10&query=%22multiples%22&verticalKey=events) to help prepare for twins, triplets or more - Review your healthcare coverage for hospitalization, anesthesia and circumcision (if applicable).
