One patient shares her journey to finding relief.","duration":"PT3M31S","transcript":"It's just a little old\nsmall garden that I have out there that I keep.\nI started having tremors about 30 years ago.\n\nBeing from Louisiana,\nwe fix eggplant casserole also.\nI couldn't write a note, couldn't sign my name.\nI couldn't do my everyday cooking like I'd once did.\nJust chopping vegetables was a task.\nIt was frustrating not being able\nto do the things that I was used to doing.\nWe kept changing medications until nothing seemed to work.\nThat's when we decided that we'd have to go another route.\nEssential tremors is the most common movement disorder.\nAs we get older,\nit's related to abnormal firing in the coordination area of the brain.\nWhen patients try the medications and they don't work out,\nthen we consider the different types of brain surgeries to treat the tremors.\nSutter is committed to providing its patients with the most advanced\ntreatment options and Focused Ultrasound is a powerful example of that.\nThis brings neurosurgical care at Sutter into the 21st century,\nwith the next generation neurosurgical treatment option.\nWithin Sutter Health, we're able to offer to patients\nDeep Brain Stimulation and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery.\nBut focused ultrasound is really on the cutting edge of this treatment\nfor essential tremor and tremor dominant Parkinson's disease.\nIt uses an array of transducers that allow focused beam of sound energy\nto heat up the tissue in a very precise location\nthat we can see on an MRI scan, and target that in real time,\nso that we can make sure that the tremor is improving with the treatment.\nWe're very happy to be able to offer the Cynthia as option.\nI decided I\nwas going to have the procedure on my right hand first.\nIt was an exciting time.\nOn the day of her procedure.\nWe recorded her doing spirals to see what they look like before and after.\nIt was really cool to see the beginning, and at the end you're like, oh, wow.\nThose are two different people that did those.\nImmediately following the procedure, I handed her a pretty full cup of coffee.\nI took it with my right hand, and I held the cup of coffee and there was no tremor.\nThere was no shaking.\nWhen we saw her standing there grabbing the coffee cup.\nYeah, that just did my heart so good.\nIt was the best cup of coffee. And\nI felt a great burden lifted, really.\nI thought you were through taking my picture!\n\nI had a 80th birthday celebration\nwith lots of friends and family, and I'm still celebrating, really.\nThis was a fantastic birthday present to me,\nand I am so looking forward to having the other hand done.\nI loved working with Erica, Dr.\nSchrot and everybody on the team.\nThis has been a super fantastic experience.\nEverything has gone well.\nI wouldn't go anyplace else."} ```
