Hysterectomy Recovery and Exercise

Question:

I just had a vaginal hysterectomy last week. When can I start exercising again and what type would be best?

Answer:

Since vaginal hysterectomy requires separation of the vagina from the cervix, a suture line is needed to close the opening at the top of the vagina. Like any healing incision, it is important to avoid activity that may place the top of the vagina under excessive stress.

Exercise that increases internal core pressure like pilates, yoga, weight lifting, and sit-ups should be avoided for up to a month after your surgery. Any other exercise should be completely safe. Make sure to ask your gynecologist to concur with these recommendations.
