Alameda Health System Formally Accepts Sutter Health’s Offer to Donate San Leandro Hospital & Establish Transition Operating Fund
Sutter Health and Alameda Health System (AHS) approved a formal agreement memorializing the donation of San Leandro Hospital to AHS, as the leaderships of both organizations have agreed to the transfer of ownership of the San Leandro Hospital from Sutter Health to AHS in the coming months.
“This agreement is a significant milestone towards Alameda Health System’s vision to expand access to quality, affordable care to our diverse community,” said AHS Chief Executive Officer Wright L. Lassiter, III. “We appreciate Sutter Health’s willingness to work with us to accomplish the transfer of the hospital.”
The agreement authorizes Sutter Health to donate and transfer the assets of San Leandro Hospital—including the building, land and equipment—to AHS and to establish a transition operating fund.
“Sutter Health’s donation provides AHS and local health officials the flexibility to determine how to most effectively deliver health care services on this campus,” said David Bradley, President of the Sutter Health East Bay Region. “We’re very glad to be collaborating with AHS on this important transition.”
In addition to the significant transition fund support from Sutter Health, AHS will rely on the combined efforts and partnership with the San Leandro medical staff as well as additional financial support from the Eden Township Healthcare District, the City of San Leandro and Alameda County.
Completing this agreement clears the path for filing a change of hospital ownership. The transfer of ownership of San Leandro Hospital to AHS is anticipated to be finalized by October 30, 2013.
“We want to recognize Supervisor Wilma Chan for her leadership in bringing the parties together,” said Lassiter. “Her continued focus and the diligent work of our organizations led to a historic agreement for this important community institution.”
AHS is a 475-bed public health care system headquartered in Oakland with more than 3,000 employees and 500 physicians. San Leandro Hospital is a 93-bed facility owned and operated by nonprofit Sutter Health, based in Sacramento.
