Is Gluten Sensitivity on the Rise?
A recent article in USA TODAY (Is Gluten-Free a Lifestyle or a Diet Craze?) raised questions about the growing number of people sensitive to gluten—are they actually intolerant or are they just hopping on the latest diet bandwagon? While experts don’t exactly see eye-to-eye, most agree that gluten allergies are on the rise.
Richard Auld, M.D., a practicing gastroenterologist at Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation, explains. “Ten years ago I would have said this was a fad,” he says. “But gluten allergy – autoimmune disease – is much more common now than 50 years ago.”
Medical experts identify a number of factors that may lead to gluten issues, including the engineering of a more robust wheat grain or simply that Americans consume more wheat than in the past. Read more about the rise of gluten sensitivity.
