My Health Online Gives Patients Secure Anytime, Anywhere Access to Manage Their Health
Northern California-based Sutter Health now connects more than one million patients to its web-based patient portal My Health Online. This consumer-friendly tool gives patients secure online and mobile access to view their personal health records, email doctors, renew prescriptions and schedule appointments—anytime, anywhere.

In 1999 at the peak of the dot.com era, Sutter-affiliated Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), located in the heart of Silicon Valley, was the first health care system of its size to pilot an electronic health record (EHR) system in California. Two years later, PAMF started piloting a program to give patients secure online access to view their electronic health records—another first for California, and the first in the country to co-develop and implement Epic’s MyChart.
“Today, we live in an online world, but back in 2001 we were early innovators unsure of how this would turn out,” said Paul Tang, M.D., chief innovation and technology officer at PAMF. “After surveying both our patients and doctors involved in the pilot, we found that they were very satisfied with the technology and this gave us the confidence to move the program forward. We’re now celebrating our one millionth patient signed on to My Health Online and that’s a tremendous accomplishment.”

Today, the Sutter EHR connects all five Sutter-affiliated physician medical foundations and 17 hospital campuses—and helps caregivers improve quality, safety and efficiency. The Sutter EHR is the technology platform that allows the not-for-profit network to deliver what patients want—secure and convenient mobile or online access to manage their health care.
At a time when providers need to deliver even more value to patients, My Health Online’s expanding services and features help doctors build even stronger partnerships with their patients.
“Our one millionth patient celebrates our unwavering commitment to empower our patients and their families with the tools they need to achieve health and wellness,” said Albert Chan, M.D., medical director for Sutter Health’s My Health Online. “Since our first My Health Online patient in January 2001, we continue to innovate the care experience for our patients and communities.”
