Palo Alto Medical Foundation Opens New Sunnyvale Eye Institute
Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) announced the opening on Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, of Munnerlyn Eye Institute, a new spacious facility in Sunnyvale offering eye care for all ages as well as advanced procedures. The Institute is located at 1085 West El Camino Real.
As part of PAMF’s ophthalmology and optometry department, the doctors at Munnerlyn Eye Institute offer a full range of eye care. This includes eye exams and prescribing corrective lenses as well as treatment of eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, macular degeneration, other retina disorders, glaucoma and cataracts. Renowned specialists perform advanced surgeries and LASIK procedures. The Institute’s providers also offer specialized pediatric eye care.
The two-story Institute includes 45 exam rooms, two general procedure rooms, a state-of-the-art LASIK procedure suite with two exam rooms, four pediatric exam rooms, two preliminary testing rooms and four specialized procedure testing rooms. Some of the Institute’s most striking features include green design elements to promote sustainability and the healing elements of nature, and an abundance of glass that lets natural sunlight pour in.
The new center replaces the vision care center on Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale.
“The Munnerlyn Eye Institute will offer patients the same care and full range of services that they’ve previously enjoyed, but with the benefits of a new, modern facility designed with an optimal patient experience in mind,” said David Quincy, M.D., regional president at PAMF. “The larger space will allow us to provide comprehensive eye care to more patients and expand our services and number of providers in the future to continue to meet patient care needs.’’
The Institute is made possible in part by a gift from Charles Munnerlyn, Ph.D., and Judith Munnerlyn, for whom the facility is named. Dr. Munnerlyn is known as one of the founding fathers of laser vision correction for his role in developing the technology that has been used on more than 50 million eyes. He is the founder of VISX Inc., the leading manufacturer of laser-based vision correction systems in the world.
