Sutter Coast Hospital Partners To Provide Transportation Assistance To Patients
CRESCENT CITY – Sutter Coast Hospital is eliminating the road blocks to recovery by offering a new Transportation Assistance program to help patients return home from distant care.
The program started on Dec. 21, and provides qualified patients assistance in returning home when they need to travel outside the local area for specialty or emergency care. The new program is a financial assistance program funded through a partnership between Sutter Coast Hospital and local agencies that include the Del Norte Transportation Planning Agency, Open Door Community Health Center and Del Norte County.
“Non-emergency medical transportation was one of our highest priorities of unmet needs in this area prior to the new transportation assistance program,” said Tamera Leighton, executive director for Del Norte Local Transportation Commission. “We are grateful to have a strong partner in Sutter Coast Hospital to address this issue.”
Sutter Coast Hospital created the program to address the needs of patients who are uninsured or whose insurance does not pay a significant portion of their medical transportation and whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
“We understand that making arrangements and paying for transportation to return home can present a difficult challenge for some members of our community,” said Mitch Hanna, Sutter Coast Hospital CEO. “Our focus is to make sure our community receives excellent care from the moment they walk into a health care facility until the time they are safely at home.”
For patients looking to apply for the travel assistance program, please request an application by calling Sutter Coast Hospital case management at (707) 464-8827. The brief application asks you to provide your current income, household size and health insurance (if currently covered).
Each application is evaluated using the patient’s income at the time of application and the current federal poverty guidelines. Once an application is approved, Sutter Coast and our health partners will arrange and pay for the patients’ trip home.
In addition to the transportation program, Sutter Coast Hospital is continuing to expand the services and facilities available locally to meet the health care needs of the community. The
hospital has added several doctors to their staff since Sept. 2016 including a cardiologist, oncologist, gynecologist/obstetrics and hospitalist.
