Sutter Health Board of Directors Elects Longtime Silicon Valley Leader as New Chair
Sacramento-Based Ophthalmologist Also Appointed to Board as Newest Member
Sutter Health announced today the appointment of Richard M. Levy, Ph.D., as chair of the Northern California-based network’s Board of Directors. Dr. Levy assumes his new role following fellow Bay Area-based business leader, Geraldine Brinton, who completed two consecutive one-year terms as board chair.
Since Dr. Levy joined Sutter Health’s board in 2006, the network of doctors, not-for-profit hospitals and other health care services has experienced tremendous change in the health care environment. Strong board commitment and leadership led to the development of Sutter Health’s key transformational programs, such as a systemwide plan to eliminate waste and increase cost efficiency in the network’s business services; a multi-billion-dollar plan to replace or upgrade outpatient and acute care facilities; an initiative of approximately $1 billion to implement an electronic health record in all of Sutter’s outpatient and acute care facilities; an investment of $1.2 billion between 2008 and 2012 to ensure a fully-funded retirement plan for 47,000 beneficiaries; and resources to support the poor and underserved, giving $756 million through disaster relief funds, community benefit and charity care in 2011 alone.
“Dr. Levy’s appointment as board chair comes at an exciting time for Sutter Health and the entire health care industry,” said Sutter Health President and CEO Pat Fry. “I’m confident that his strategic counsel and proven leadership will help us navigate the future of health care and lead Sutter Health through one of the most challenging, innovative and creative time periods in our history.”
“Together, we will continue to transform care to achieve the highest levels of quality, efficiency and affordability as well as improve partnerships with our patients and each other to provide a highly personalized patient experience,” Fry continued.

About Robert R. Peabody Jr., M.D.
The Sutter Health Board of Directors also appointed Robert R. Peabody Jr., M.D., to the board. Dr. Peabody, a resident of Sacramento, assumes his new role in January 2013.
A board-certified ophthalmologist with more than two decades of medical experience, Dr. Peabody earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and residency at Texas Tech University.
Dr. Peabody practices within Medical Vision Technology, Inc., a full-service eye care group with offices in Davis, Roseville and Sacramento. In addition to seeing patients in his full-time clinic, Dr. Peabody has served as the group’s president since 1989. “We’re very excited to have Dr. Peabody join the board,” says Geraldine Brinton, Sutter Health board member and immediate past chairperson. “Far from a stranger to Sutter Health, Dr. Peabody is a steering committee member and chair of the Ophthalmology Department for Sutter Physician Alliance, board chair for Sutter Independent Physicians, a board member for Fort Sutter Surgery Center and serves on the board of Sutter Outpatient Services.”
“We look forward to tapping into Dr. Peabody’s expertise as a physician and business leader to move us towards our goal of delivering the highest quality care at the most affordable price,” Brinton continued.
