Sutter Health Earns ‘BOLD’ Recognition for Excellence in its Leadership Development Practices to Improve Healthcare
National Organization Acknowledges Sutter for Preparing Leaders to Transform Healthcare
The National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) identified Sutter Health as a top 10 “BOLD” healthcare organization using evidence-based leadership development practices to achieve excellence and improve the quality of healthcare in their communities.
“We place a high priority on investing in our emerging and established leaders, whose ideas and innovations help shape the healthcare of tomorrow—here in Northern California and across the world,” said Pat Fry, Sutter Health president and CEO. “Formal recognition for this work pays tribute to the thoughtful research and planning of our talent organizational development team at Sutter Health University.”
Through BOLD—Best Organizations for Leadership Development—NCHL recognizes those leading the field in preparing current and future generations to transform healthcare. Sutter Health earned recognition for its long-standing Leadership Pathway, which comprehensively addresses both physician and management development. The program combines in-person and on-demand learning, integrated succession planning processes, as well as high-potential pathways. These Sutter Health programs all meet NCHL’s best practice criteria for design and business integration:
· Leadership Academy: Sutter Health’s flagship executive development program that includes academic and experiential learning; action learning challenges and executive coaching
· Accelerated Change Excellence: A program designed to enable senior leaders to lead impactful change efforts and to develop stronger paired/team leader partnerships
· Management and Clinical Excellence: A program designed to teach a common approach toward improvement to a diverse group of healthcare professionals, promoting synergy in problem-solving and professional relationships
· Sutter Certified Leader I and II: The Certified Leader I program helps develop the essential leadership competencies by teaching emotional intelligence, influence, team-building and communication skills; the Certified Leader II program helps leaders hone their managerial courage to intelligently lead others while efficiently managing business and financial decisions
Sutter Health’s focuses on the “four Es” of development—exploration, experience, exposure and education—throughout the entire career life cycle leads to enhanced recruitment selection, succession planning, career mobility and overall organization effectiveness. Sutter Health also learns best practices from organizations outside healthcare to make the network’s programs as robust and comprehensive as possible.
“Strong leadership differentiates an organization,” Fry said. “Effective leaders at every level create a culture of accountability and high performance, which helps Sutter Health live up to our promise of partnering with each other and patients to deliver high-quality, personalized care.”
“BOLD honors health systems for their leadership development work, which importantly, will be available to organizations throughout the country to give them tools to assess the effectiveness of their approach to preparing current and future leaders as a critical factor in achieving organizational excellence,” NCHL CEO Andrew N. Garman said. “We congratulate the BOLD organizations for their innovation and commitment to leadership development and hope to see their examples benefit other health systems.”
NCHL selected 10 high-ranking winners from 120 health systems that participated in its 2014 National Health Leadership Survey. NCHL will recognize these organizations at its inaugural BOLD luncheon held in conjunction with NCHL’s 2014 Human Capital Investment Conference on Nov. 20 and 21.
