Sutter Health Leader Named Chair-Elect for American Medical Group Association Board of Directors
The American Medical Group Association (AMGA), a national organization of more than 150,000 physicians and 430 medical groups, appointed Sutter Health’s Don Wreden, M.D., to chair-elect of the AMGA Board of Directors. Dr. Wreden, Chief Medical Group Transformation Officer at Sutter Health, currently serves as secretary on the AMGA board and assumes his new position in January.
Guided by its board of directors, the Virginia-based AMGA brings together physician group leaders from across the nation to share best practices, experiences and strategies that promote continued improvement in patient care quality.
“The AMGA could not have picked a more outstanding physician leader for this role,” Sarah Krevans, COO for the not-for-profit network says. “Dr. Wreden leads with intelligence, compassion and an unwavering focus on what is best for the patient. He is passionate about transformative changes in health care and his visionary leadership will be a great asset to AMGA.”
As chief medical group transformation officer for Sutter Health, Dr. Wreden is responsible for comprehensive care transformation strategies across the Sutter Health’s Northern California clinical network. In this role, Dr. Wreden recently facilitated the first Sutter Health Physician Symposium—a call to action for comprehensive physician leadership in patient-centered care.
“I am thrilled with this opportunity to further serve on the AMGA board and help the association pursue its goals for the upcoming year,” Dr. Wreden says. “This is an exciting time in health care, and I’m honored to be part of team that supports physician and medical groups across the nation in improving care.”
As a board-certified internist, Dr. Wreden practiced general internal medicine for nearly 20 years before serving as president and CEO of Sutter Medical Group from 2001 to 2013. Under his leadership, Sutter Medical Group grew from 150 to more than 500 physicians, caring for 600,000 patients, and it earned multiple recognitions as a top-performing medical group in California.
Dr. Wreden also served for a decade on Sutter Health’s board of directors, advancing Sutter’s commitment to provide high-quality, more-efficient personalized care. While on the Sutter Health board, Dr. Wreden sat on the finance committee, quality committee, and served as chair of the public policy council.
