Sutter Health’s Stephen Lockhart, M.D., Ph.D. Named To Governor Brown’s Precision Medicine Advisory Committee
Continuing the state’s efforts to use advanced computing and technology to better understand, treat and prevent disease, California Governor Jerry Brown established the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Precision Medicine. Among those appointed is Steven Lockhart, M.D., Ph.D., Sutter Health chief medical officer and an expert in this field as well as health equity.
Sutter Health is a leader in precision medicine, which aims to use data-driven tools and analysis to develop new diagnostics, therapies and insights into health and disease. Sutter’s Precision Medicine Institute brings together researchers in genomics and epidemiology—along with experts in health services research. Together, they discover diagnostics and treatments that can address unmet patient care needs and rapidly translate these discoveries into clinical protocols throughout Northern California and beyond. The organization’s highly diverse patient base, billion dollar investment in electronic health records, existing research and infrastructure capabilities—and a centralized Biobank laboratory facility—also allows the health system to conduct research faster and at a lower cost.
“California is a world leader in medicine and technology. This committee of experts will help us think through how precision medicine can improve health and health care for Californians,” said Governor Brown in today’s press release announcement.
The committee will advise the Governor’s Office on emerging precision medicine policy issues, such as data sharing and data privacy within and across technology platforms and tools; clinical utility of precision medicine approaches to care; patient and provider engagement and education; and economic impact and sustainability of precision medicine-based treatments. Committee members encompass the range of expertise necessary: biotechnology, technology, health systems, health disparities, population health, cancer, bioinformatics, ethics, genomics and patient engagement.
For more than a decade, Dr. Lockhart has been a valued leader at Sutter Health. A board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Lockhart first served as chief administrative officer at the St. Luke’s campus of Sutter Health’s California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Since then, he’s held several executive positions before being named chief medical officer for the not-for-profit system in 2015. A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Lockhart earned a Master of Philosophy degree in economics from Oxford University and Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in biostatistics degrees from Cornell University.
