Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento Receives National Environmental Awards
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In recognition of successful programs to reduce its environmental impact, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento received two awards from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. Partner for Change and Greening the OR are two of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health-care sector.
The Partner for Change Award recognizes health-care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably, and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury, and have developed successful sustainability programs in many areas.
The Greening the OR Award recognizes the facility demonstrating the most success in reducing the environmental impact of its surgical suites. Operating rooms are large contributors to a health-care facility’s environmental footprint, creating opportunity for significant cost savings and sustainability improvements.
Last year, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento created the Green Council, a team of frontline employees and managers, that is looking at every waste stream to gain efficiencies, increase recycling, and standardize toxic-free patient room furnishings in order to create better, safer, greener workplaces and communities. The Green Council is led by Environmental Services Director Debbie Sandberg, who has many years of experience in building and managing environmental sustainability efforts such as reducing toxic dispersion, enhancing material recyclability, maximizing use of renewable resources, and reducing the carbon impact of waste.
“As health-care providers, sustainability is part of our healing mission and central to protecting the health of our patients, staff and community,” said Sandberg. “We take pride in our sustainability programs and the positive impacts they have on the environment and the communities we serve.”
The awards will be presented at the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Gala, set for May 9th in San Diego at the conclusion of the CleanMed Conference & Exhibition.
