Frequently Asked Questions
What does not-for-profit really mean?
As a not-for profit organization, PAMF operates in a fundamentally different way from investor-owned healthcare systems. We have no shareholders or corporate officers, and any revenue remaining after we cover the cost of care is reinvested to enhance patient services, through improved facilities and equipment, health education and medical research.
PAMF's community-based, not-for-profit approach to healthcare is unique in that it allows us to offer a comprehensive array of services to meet the diverse health needs of the community. We offer many programs and services that few organizations provide, because they are not profitable.
PAMF relies upon the generosity of grateful patients and compassionate community members who make philanthropic gifts. Our philanthropic donors recognize the need to partner with PAMF in providing the highest-quality care to everyone.

Why does PAMF need philanthropic support?
PAMF depends on the strength of philanthropic partnerships to realize our not-for-profit mission of meeting the healthcare needs of people in our communities. By funding improved facilities and equipment, health education and medical research, we deliver the quality of care our patients expect and deserve.

Are there systems in place to manage and protect philanthropic gifts?
Yes. All gifts we receive are audited annually by our Sutter Health Finance team to ensure that each gift is allocated to the program or critical need specified by the donor. Our Community Board of Trustees and our endowment committee that is made up of Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group physicians and board members also ensures that all gifts are designated as specified by our donors. We have many checks and balances in place to ensure your gifts are used in the way that you have requested.
