## Why get vaccinated?

Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself from flu and other respiratory illnesses. The [California Department of Public Health (CDPH)](https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Pages/public-health-for-all/publichealthforall.aspx#1 "California Department of Public Health (CDPH)") recommends that everyone age 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine each year. CDPH also recommends that everyone age 6 months and older have access and the choice to receive COVID-19 vaccines.

General FAQs

**Can I get both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines in the same arm?**

Most people can get both vaccines in the same arm. If you’re getting the enhanced flu vaccine (approved for those 65 years and older), consider getting your COVID-19 and flu vaccines in different arms to reduce any arm pain and discomfort.

**Do I need to bring my insurance card to the appointment?**

Do I need to bring my insurance card to the appointment?
Yes, please bring your insurance or Medicare/Medi-Cal card to your vaccination. Check with your insurance company about possible costs associated with vaccination.

**How much do flu and COVID-19 vaccines cost?**

COVID-19 and flu vaccines are covered by most insurance companies, including Medicare Part B and MediCal plans. There may be a copay if insurance doesn’t cover the full cost. Check with your insurance company if you have questions about coverage for the COVID-19 vaccine based on your age or risk condition.

**Should I get vaccinated if I recently had the flu or COVID-19?**

Yes. According to the CDC, evidence indicates that people can get added protection by getting vaccinated after they’ve had COVID or flu. It’s best to wait until your symptoms are gone before getting either vaccine.

**Should I postpone any medical procedures or screenings, like mammograms, before my vaccines?**

Unless specifically indicated otherwise, you should be able to go ahead with most routine procedures and screenings either before or after receiving a COVID-19 or flu vaccine. However, talk to your doctor about getting a vaccine if you’re scheduling a surgery, transplant or other procedure that requires anesthesia.

Please wait 4-6 weeks after your vaccination to schedule [your mammogram](https://www.sutterhealth.org/services/mammogram).

Pregnancy and children FAQs

**Are COVID-19 vaccines safe for younger children?**

Scientists ran large studies and trials before recommending COVID-19 vaccines for children. Research shows that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and provide more benefits than risks for children as young as 6 months old. [CDPH](https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/publichealth4all/vaccines.aspx "CDPH"), the [American Academy of Pediatrics](https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/156/5/e2025073924/203222/Recommendations-for-COVID-19-Vaccines-in-Infants "American Academy of Pediatrics") (AAP), and the [American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists](https://publications.aap.org/aapnews/news/34406/ACOG-continues-to-recommend-flu-COVID-Tdap-RSV?autologincheck=redirected "American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists") (ACOG) all recommend COVID-19 vaccination for children and during pregnancy. They highlight that studies show the vaccines are safe and effective.

**Can my child receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time as other immunizations?**

Yes. Children can get the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time as other vaccines.

**If I’m pregnant or hoping to get pregnant, should I get a COVID-19 vaccine?**

Vaccinations remain one of the best and safest ways to protect against illness and/or reduce the severity of the infection, including [during pregnancy](https://www.sutterhealth.org/health/pregnancy-and-the-flu). Based on CDPH guidelines, pregnancy is considered a high-risk condition, which increases a person’s chances of complications from COVID-19.

Several studies, as well as groups like the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), have found no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines cause problems during pregnancy, including with placenta development.

They recommend getting the vaccine in any trimester once you’re eligible. In addition, there’s no evidence that fertility problems are a side effect of any vaccine, including COVID-19 vaccines. [Talk to your doctor](https://www.sutterhealth.org/schedule-appointment?utm_source=BottomHeader&utm_medium=website) about the risks of COVID-19 during pregnancy, and the risks and benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine.

**Why is it important for my child to get vaccinated?**

Everyone is at risk for getting flu or COVID-19, and symptoms can be severe at any age.
Getting flu and COVID-19 vaccines for your child will help to boost their immune response against these viruses. It's the best way to protect them against complications from infection and helps reduce the spread of these infections across families, schools and communities.
