## Abstract

Innovation in Large Service Systems, a research collaboration at Carnegie Mellon University’s Silicon Valley Campus, recently held a workshop on “Innovation in Healthcare Intelligence” at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Campus in Bethesda, MD. Senior level physicians, researchers and administrators convened to discuss “What’s Beyond the EMRs to Drive Innovation in Healthcare Intelligence and Smart Services.”

Sponsored by NIH, National Cancer Institute (NCI), West Wireless Health Institute, Carnegie Mellon University’s Silicon Valley Campus and 360Fresh, the workshop saw over 120 attendees, including 3 keynote speakers and 17 panelists. Attendees contributed to a full day of presentations and conversations on the current state of healthcare intelligence. Representatives from NIH/NCI, ONC, NSF, AHRQ, NIST, NLM and other federal agencies attended the workshop. Overall, this was the first time that several federal government agencies, academic medical centers and industry gathered together to share and brainstorm on the next generation of healthcare intelligence solutions and services to improve patient quality, safety and outcomes.

Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley Director Martin Griss offered, “As one of the organizers, I was gratified to see how many senior people, from NIH, NSF, ONC, universities and major medical providers participated in this first ever event to explore the potential of using the EMR to improve healthcare. This bodes well for a concerted effort to share approaches and technologies to make a difference.”

Workshop co-chair Ramesh Jakka offered, "As a co-chair I was enlightened by the speakers and panelists who passionately brought forward the challenges in enabling intelligence over medical records to improve health care delivery, drive better outcomes and optimize services in a cost-effective way to the patients."
