**What’s the difference between a family doctor and an internal medicine doctor?**

Family doctors and internal medicine doctors are two types of primary care providers. The main difference between family and [internal medicine](https://www.sutterhealth.org/services/internal-medicine) doctors is the age groups they treat. Family doctors provide healthcare for patients from infants to adults over age 99. Internal medicine doctors care for adults and generally don’t see children or teens under 18.

**Do I need to see my family medicine doctor before a specialist?**

For most medical problems, you should see your primary care provider first. If the situation requires treatment from a specialist, your family medicine doctor will make the referral and help arrange your appointment if necessary.
