Neuropsychology for Epilepsy

Neuropsychology focuses on thinking, learning and behavior and how it relates to the brain. With evaluations and tests, neuropsychologists can figure out the strength of a patient’s memory and thinking skills.

For people with or that may have epilepsy, neuropsychologists use standardized, paper-and-pencil tests to determine memory, cognition and emotional function. An epilepsy diagnosis or treatment plan may be made from these results.

Typically people are referred to a neuropsychologist if they notice issues with:

  • Learning
  • Memory
  • Focusing
  • Finishing projects
  • Controlling behavior
  • Expressing themselves

How do epileptic seizures cause neuropsychological problems?

People with epilepsy who have recurring seizures run the risk of complications in brain function. When looking at a patient’s symptoms and how their seizures may affect their brain, it’s important to look at several factors:

  • Type and Location of Seizures
  • Frequency/severity of seizures
  • Length of illness
  • Medications
  • Underlying cause of seizures

Each of these factors will help your neuropsychologist and epileptologist understand your seizures and how they may affect you. When you have a seizure, it’s important to write notes down for your care team. These notes will help your care team determine an appropriate treatment plan for you.

What can you do to lower risk of neuropsychological issues with epilepsy?

For people living with epilepsy, it’s important that you discuss with your condition with your doctor or epileptologist. If issues continue, your doctor may be able to order additional diagnostic testing, such as blood work, EEGs or brain imaging.

If you’re unable to control your epilepsy, your doctor may send you to a neuropsychologist. Your neuropsychology will identify ways to support your brain’s strengths and weaknesses.

Speak with your doctor if you would like a referral to a neuropsychologist.
